Google Translate in AR perspective

 

Google translate has been a revolutionary product which has helped many people in different ways. Today, we can see that it has the capability of translating the content in real-time by hiding the original text. You can see the above pictures of how google translate is working when the content is viewed from different angles and distance. The translation gets more lucid when the lens is closer to the content. When viewed from a different angle or you move away a bit from the content, the translation eventually looks vaguer. Now that you are seeing the mapping from the mobile device, how does it feel like when your eye lens can translate it for you immediately after looking at the content? That's a killer!! :D  

 

When Augmented reality is equipped with this software there are pros and cons as well. Let's discuss that

 

Pros:

 

  • AR has the potential to change the tourism with google translate. People can walk around the world without asking for a translator. Right from the signboards descriptions, everything becomes easier for the tourists who come from different parts of the world.

  • Prototype demos to the clients can be made much easier when they are from different ethnicity.

 

Cons:

 

  • Though AR has the potential to change the way we are looking at the world today, this has to be mature enough to use it on a regular basis.

  • The "google translate" most of the times fail to convert a sentence of a foreign language to a meaningful sentence in the original language. Sometimes it is raw conversion word by word without considering the grammar. This needs to be fixed with growing research on Natural language processing.

  • There ain't an auto-detect feature that can recognize the foreign language and translate it to the user's choice and hence they should be aware of the name of the language before they start using it. This can be also made possible by incorporating machine learning features to detect a language. But this might require a high computing hardware like GPU's(Graphics processing unit) and TPU's(Tensor Processing unit) that can increase the prices of the HMD.

  • With a varying degree of the success in translating the content and as the mapping changes continuously, this might cause inconvenience to the eyes and can also trigger headaches.
